Good to see this back! Even though this Bang is a lot quieter than the Marvel one, maybe the new movie will inspire someone. Or the new Reboot (?) that DC is doing (only a handful of years after the last one!).
Maybe seeing Wonder Woman on the big screen FINALLY will also perk things up. Can't wait for her movie next year! :)
I mean. Full disclosure, the reason I didn't sign up last year and the reason I can't sign up this year is because artist claiming starts beginning of September and that's also when school starts.
But I'm really happy this bang is back because the fandom n e e d s more fanworks! ;P
Understandable :( The other option would be if you had someone to do a tandem bang with - you can sign up with an author now, and work with them the whole time. But yeah, our match-ups do coincide with school starting, sorry!
Glad to see you again! And hey, if you're worried about backups, google docs is a pretty easy way to keep something safe. Alternately, we'd be happy to keep a copy - email it occasionally to the bang email and let me know it's for safekeeping, and I'll keep it sitting around :)
I think I'll be using google docs this round. I was just never a fan of gdocs or MS Word because of how their apostrophes looked. Which is a weird thing, I know, but I'm gonna get over it lol
So I listened to the new episode of the Auralphonic podcast this past weekend: http://archiveofourown.org/works/6866230 (a podcast about podfic) but I was, alas, too late to join the Marvel Bang in a way where I'd be allowed to pick out a particular story I felt like making a 10K word podfic out of as a "solo" work, or allowed to make a fanvideo as a solo fanwork that wasn't AU. This is not the first time that podcast has frustratingly made me want to join a big bang and then said "Oh, and the last day for sign ups is like TODAY (the day the podcast is released)" which is so not helpful for anyone who doesn't have time to listen to the podcast IMMEDIATELY... XD I didn't even take all THAT long to get to listening to it...
I heavily considered signing up as an artist over there, but I am not THAT much of a Marvel fangirl, honestly. I've only just started seeing all the MCU movies over the past year or so, still am catching up on those but I would be all caught up on all of them by the time art had to be made. I also saw maybe the first 9? episodes of Daredevil... and for whatever reason was never very compelled to finish even season 1, although I lowkey do plan to continue watching that show EVENTUALLY... but like, idk, it just seemed like it probably would be a bad idea to join and be an artist over there especially when I know I'm already gonna be busy writing a fic for the Femslash Big Bang that crosses over the version of Kara from the new TV show Supergirl with Iris from the CW version of The Flash... XD
BUT THEN... I noticed: http://marvelbang.tumblr.com/dcu and I um... couldn't resist lol.
So I signed up as an artist here in the DC sister bang!! Making an AU fanvideo about a DC Comics-based TV show is something I know I could do much easier than an AU video that uses the MCU movies. I'm way more familiar with vidding these TV shows. I've actually made some AU-ish vids in DC fandoms before - the first big bang I was in as an artist was a Glee one where I used a few clips of Barry from The Flash in an AU capacity as "Sebastian" on Glee and used Quentin from Arrow as Blaine's dad anyway (Plus some bonus clips from Smallville) lmao... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvDGCEQvBEg But also, I do have some AU Smallville videos in my history: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeO4N5u_04M&index=4&list=PLD0E1F69CFE6AF6E7 etc. And I've been vidding the canon for The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow, etc quite a bit lately and could make my first AU vid using Legends of Tomorrow or Supergirl with much greater ease than anything in Marvel's world. XD
Actually, the truth is that if I'd known about this big bang I might've signed up to write my Kara/Iris (Supergirl/The Flash) story for this bang instead, because then I'd feel less pressure to make femslash the focus of my story and instead maybe I'd be exploring the worldbuilding and even would feel comfortable exploring some het ships to just as strong a degree within my first EVER crossover story haha... but idk. I am pretty happy to be a part of the Femslash Big Bang because it is a bigger bang and that makes it extra exciting, because I do feel femslash deserves to be the focus of at least one of my long fics I attempt to write (this is my very first time doing that!!), and PLUS, now that I'm doing my writing all over there, I just might be able to get podfic made for me as my art!! XD There are actually quite a few artists over in the Femslash big bang who know DC fandoms btw. You might want to use them as a resource if you find yourself needing to recruit any more...
(My previous comment was marked as spam because I included a few links, whoops. I hope you can mark it as "not spam" for me.)
(Part 2 of my comment, no links this time:)
As for this DCU big bang, though:
I actually am really hoping here that there's a chance I'll get to do podfic as my art for a story in a DC-based TV fandom I know, though, because I've only done podfic as "art" in one big bang type thing once before. And I have never really performed a podfic for a DC based fandom before (unless the team podfic I'm hosting counts, but I barely speak in that one!).
If there's anything I love, it's expanding my fannish horizons and trying something I haven't gotten a chance to do before... Plus I think podficcing an ~11,000 word story will end up being maybe slightly more time consuming than making a fanvideo trailer? (If the story is closer to 20,000 words, then, well, slightly longer than making two full length AU fanvideo trailers lol). But a podfic will in the end become a product I'm slightly more likely to be truly, completely proud of?? XD Lol I tend to get super embarrassed by at least parts of my AU fanvideos where I try to make manips and all of that stuff. I tend to feel like I am not as talented there as I wish I was. I will try my best either way, for sure, though. I'd be pretty satisfied being paired up to make either type of art.
Anyway, I'm excited about participating in this big bang as an artist and I REALLY hope there is gonna be a fandom I am familiar with in here. XD I'm pretty flexible with characters/ships I enjoy creating for... but fandoms, not usually as flexible.
Sorry for the long comment here. I just really wanted to share my POV!!
(Hmm, I'm not seeing another comment from you on this post, spam or otherwise. I have no idea why that might be D: )
Hi! I'm so glad you reached out. We'd absolutely love to have you do podfic for this big bang.
The trouble we've had in the past with podfic is that the timeline is different - the way our writing structure works, stories don't have to be finished until they're posted. We've had people claim a fic to do podfic, only to find out that the rough draft the author submitted was really, really rough, and they had a very short time in which to record the fic once it was actually polished up. We've come up with two possible solutions for this.
One, if you want to work with someone on a brand-new story, you can try looking in the find a partner post to see if someone there is looking for a podficcer (or you can ask around on tumblr or twitter or wherever your fannish life lives). That way, the author knows ahead of time that they're going to have to finish writing sooner than the posted deadline for authors, so you have plenty of time to record. If you go with this route, great! Let me know, and I'll move you and your author from the individual sign-ups to the tandem sign-up, so you're already paired up to work together.
Two, if you have a story you've read in the past that you'd like to record, we have a solo sign-up option. The author isn't a participant, since the story has already been written, but if you get permission to podfic their 10k+ story, they we can sign you up to participate as a solo podficcer. The benefit here is that you can choose something you're already familiar and comfortable with, and you have from now until posting time (in October) to complete and polish your podfic. If you go with this route, also great! Again, let me know so I can move your sign-up to the solo sign-ups.
If you want, you can absolutely stay signed up as an accompanying fanworker, just like you are now, and take your chances with doing a podfic or a fanvid when claims roll around in late August. The choice is absolutely yours - I just wanted to let you know what options were available to you :)
First of all, my comment makes a bit more sense in the context of the first one? In fact it was originally all one single super long comment, but it exceeded the character limit so I posted it in two parts. XD (If you google the phrase "where to find marked as spam comments livejournal", the second and third posts that come up might help you find it? I can still see it myself, greyed out. They tell me my comment was marked as spam per this community's guidelines. I know in the Small Fandom Bang, which I recently participated in, the mod had some trouble finding marked-as-spam comments at first but eventually she was able to approve them. )
Secondly, I mainly signed up as an accompanying fanwork artist because the deadline for signing up solo has since passed, it was May 16th?? which is something I kind of mentioned in part 1 of my comment. So I figured "darn it, I'm too late" and didn't really give signing up that way all that much consideration...
(I will keep looking for it - they used to show up for me in here, but I'm not seeing it right now. LJ changed things, I guess, bah. And I have no idea why it would mark it as spam anyway - we have spam filtering turned off for this very reason. Double bah!)
As for signing up as a solo fanworker - yes, the deadline has technically passed, but if that's something you want to do, I'm willing to let you sign up there a little late, no worries. Let me know (and I'll see if i can find that comment!).
(Sorry again about the inconvenience!) I hate that any/all links will end up making it marked as spam, even a link to another livejournal page lol... so annoying... (Also, now my apology for writing SUCH a long comment is more appropriate haha.)
Honestly, I've now got myself all psyched up to work alongside someone else so I don't think in the end I want to do this as a solo participant.
I will check out the "Find a partner" post now, though, or even ask around elsewhere if that doesn't work out... because if you're willing to let me be a partner/willing to let me sign up tandem late, that means I'll be much more likely to be able to do podfic for it, you're completely right.
It worked out for me before in the Sciles Mini Bang 2014/2015 because it was a single fandom - actually single PAIRING - bang, so technically podficcing ANY of them *could've* worked, even if some would be more difficult for me than others because of length or subject matter/theme. I would've known the fandom enough, and because they made authors include what % complete their story was and also how many words they had so far, and so I was able to pick a story to podfic that was actually 100% completed and only 5300 or so words, a super win/win and that just helped me a lot as a podfic-type artist in that mini-bang.
I was willing to try my best to work with my author and if I had to I could always make a fanvideo trailer, which is something that can be done while the author is still finishing up writing their fic. XD But you're right that I'd have more fun if I could have a partner I'm working with ahead of time and if they could maybe finish writing early just so that I could do a podfic. So I will... embark on a quest now to try to find a partner.
Thanks for being willing to bend the deadline for me!!
Okay so I found someone who is excited to sign up tandem with me. Her username in fandom spaces is "quarticmoose" and she's planning to write a story for The Flash (2014 TV series). And I'll be doing a podfic of it as the art. We're late so we can't see the Google Form and fill that out anymore, but is that okay? Her email is ispeakllamese@aim.com, and she says, "I don't have a livejournal; do I need one to participate?" - she's on tumblr, AO3, etc.
I'd love for my artist sign up to be switched to being in tandem with her as a writer. So just let me know what you need from us.
I'm so glad to hear you found someone! She doesn't need an LJ to participate, no worries there :) I've taken care of the sign-up switcharoo, so you're all set to go!
Having your fic beta-ed by someone that isn't you is a requirement of this bang. We will be having an amnesty period the week after posting ends which means you have a little more time to look.
The beta can be someone you know in fandom or it can be someone in your real life that is willing to edit the fic for you, but someone needs to have beta-ed it for you before you can post it in this bang.
It's usually possible to find a beta through fanfiction.net too, even these days. https://www.fanfiction.net/betareaders/ You can pick the specific fandom your story is set in and find multiple betas familiar with that fandom (unless the fandom is ridiculously tiny... but there are also betas willing to beta for broader categories too regardless of if they know the fandom!), and even potentially, if you're in a rush, you can message like 4 or 5 at once and say what you need and see who responds. Yes some will leave you hanging but some will respond. A good indicator of who might respond is how recently they've updated their main Fanfiction.net user profile or posted a new fic/new chapter to a fic too.
i can see it, yes. i see that you've found a beta and they're working on the fic. let me know when they're done and you've posted the whole thing and i'll put it live then. no worries on waiting - we won't penalize you at all for being late since you had a last-minute beta problem :)
Thank you! I apologize to the comm though. Grad school is nuts and I wish I could have more time to do this right but I wanted to make the deadline. The fic will be 100% when I get back in a few days! Thank you for your patience and understanding!
So yesterday I completely missed my posting date, sorry about that :/ What I want to know is if there is an amnesty period. I couldn't find any info about it, and I really want to post the fic and wonderful art :) Thanks.
Hey, no worries, go ahead and put it up :) This is actually amnesty week right now - I've been afk so I forgot to put the announcement up. We're glad to have you post it when you're ready to!
