Hello! I hope everyone is doing well, and your writing and creating is coming along! These are the Rough Draft Submission Guidelines, and I will be accepting rough drafts between July 1st-July 8th, Wednesday-Wednesday. Please make sure to read everything!

Rough draft submission is only for the Traditional Author track. If you have chosen Solo Author or Tandem Author, do not submit a rough draft! This is only for the authors wishing to be paired with a fanworker, and are not already working with a fanworker. =D

If you signed up as an undecided author, now is the time to choose if you will continue as a Solo author, Traditional author, or if you have paired up with an already, Tandem author. I will only be sending emails out to those that signed up as undecided and have yet to let me know which path they've chosen, however, if you need to switch please get in contact with me, either on Discord or email dcubang@gmail.com. Now is also the time to switch down from the 10k Big Bang to the 5k Mini-Bang if you need to!

Here's a helpful post for writing summaries!

Beta readers are not required this year, but if you are wanting a beta reader, here is a resource post for finding one: Beta Reader Resource Post. Please note that these might be outdated!

Summaries will be posted for preview on Friday, July 10th. Please look your summary over when it is posted for preview to check for any errors and contact me ASAP to make corrections. Hello everyone! Both authors and artists, please make sure to read through this, as it pertains to both groups!

Authors, today, rough drafts are due! I will be giving everyone until Wednesday, August 22nd, 2PM MDT to turn in rough drafts, as I won't be on a computer until about that time to close rough draft submission.

Click here to see what time that is for you! || Countdown to when Rough Draft Submissions Close!

Only Traditional track authors need to turn in a rough draft, not Solo or Tandem.

Rough drafts and summaries are for attracting an artist! If you signed up as a Solo track author and now want to switch to Traditional, and your story reaches the 4k/8k word rough draft minimum, send in your rough draft ASAP and let me know that you are switching to Traditional. After rough draft submissions close, authors will no longer be able to switch from Solo to Traditional; tracks will be locked in place. (10k authors can step down to the 5k Mini-Bang until October 1st, when posting dates will be chosen on the final and mandatory check-in.)

To submit your rough draft, follow the instructions from this post. And be sure to read over the summary writing tips as well!

Please do not turn in a rough draft if you are really unsure that you can finish by the end of November! There are no consequences for dropping out if you have not been matched with an artist. There are also no consequences to switching to the Solo Track and being unable to finish your story by the end of November, even if you have selected a posting date come October 1st! We just don't want artists or authors left hanging if they are expecting a story or piece of art!

Tandem pairs: I hope you and your artists are doing well! If there has been a breakdown in communication and one party has not been in contact with the other, try reaching out to your partner again, and if there is no response, please get in contact with me ASAP!

Additionally, if you are an author and have paired up with an artist already, please send me an email with your artist's name/email and have them sign-up as an artist here so I can get that recorded!

Solo authors: If you wish to have a piece of art for your project, but do not have enough written to submit for the rough draft, you can find an artist on your own! There is the option to switch to Tandem, if your artist signs up before September 1st. After that, you can still arrange to work with an artist on your own, with the caveat being that this artist will not be bound by the DCU Bang guidelines; if that artist does not finish their art for your story, there are no consequences I can enforce on them.

Signing up as a Tandem pair can have consequences if you do not finish your story. If the author, or artist, do not finish and either party wishes to post for the DCU Bang 2018, the party that did not finish will be banned from participating in the DCU Bang 2019. If both parties of the Tandem pair drop out, there are no consequences. If a Solo author that arranged for their own artist who is not signed up for the DCU Bang, cannot finish their story, there are no consequences, since the artist is not signed up for the DCU Bang 2018; in other words, this sort of arrangement will be treated like a regular Solo track author.

Traditional track authors that need to switch to Solo, 10k Big Bang authors that need to switch to the 5k Mini Bang, and authors and artists that need to drop out, please get in touch with me ASAP! Emailing me at dcubang@gmail or sending me a message on the DCU Bang Discord server are the two fastest ways to get in contact with me, but the Page-A-Mod will work as well!

Artists! It's almost time for summary previews, on August 24th. On Friday, a preview of the summaries will go live, but the post will be locked for comments until Saturday, around Noon MDT. Instructions on claiming a story will be included with the summary preview post.

It's also important to note that the DreamWidth summary preview post is the only post that will have comments unlocked for claiming. The LiveJournal DCU Bang summary preview post will be for reference only. This is so I can be fair with claims and truly give stories on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you do not have a DreamWidth account, this is okay! DreamWidth has an OpenID system, should you want to use another account to comment, and anonymous commenting will also be allowed. If you are claiming a story as an anonymous commenter, I will need the username you signed up under, so I can get your information and send out emails! Claiming stories by email will also be an option! (More on this process will be provided later, but if you have questions now, don't hesitate to ask! I'm here to help. =D)

Artist sign-ups won't close until September 1st, and the Artist Sign-Up Post is right here!

It might be a good idea to check over the full schedule too, to keep the upcoming dates in mind. Here's the full schedule!

And as always, if you ever have a question or concern, please get in contact with me right away at either dcubang@gmail.com, the DCU Bang Discord server, or at the Page-A-Mod post!

Hello! I hope everyone is doing well, and your writing and creating is coming along! These are the rough draft submission guidelines, don't worry, the due date isn't until August 21st. I just wanted to get the rough draft submission guidelines out about a week early, so that everyone had time to write a summary and submit their rough draft!

Rough draft submission is only for the Traditional Author track. If you have chosen Solo Author or Tandem Author, you do not need to submit a rough draft! This is only for the authors wishing to be paired with a fanworker, and are not already working with a fanworker. =D

I am only looking for rough drafts, so it is okay if your story is still very rough at this point. I'm just checking for length and completion, which means your story does not need to be completely finished or polished, but around 80% of it needs to be done. This means that an author signed up for the 10k Traditional Bang must submit at least 8,000 words, and a 5k Mini-Bang author must submit at least 4,000 words. However, if your story is going to be about 20,000 words long, 16,000 words would be 80% complete. This is just a rough estimate. If you're not sure how long your story is going to end up, that's okay! Do your best to estimate the total length and, more importantly, gauge whether you will be able to finish or not.

If you are submitting an incomplete draft, please be aware that it needs to have all the scenes at least outlined, including the ending, so that I know you are truly close to finishing!

Please read this carefully, as this is about the consequences of not being able to finish on time.

Any author who is paired with a fanworker and does not end up posting their story by the end of November will be banned from participation for DCU Bang 2019. This is so that artists are not left hanging! There is no penalty for dropping out before rough draft submissions, nor is there a penalty for switching to Solo Author and being unable to finish. Once you are paired with an artist, please make sure that you can finish, as it is unfair to the artist if you cannot finish. (This works the other way too! It's not fair to an author if the artist cannot finish!)

If you are worried you cannot finish, or do not already have around 80% complete, but still want to continue writing, consider switching to the Solo Author track! This way, even if you don't complete your story by the end of November, there are no consequences. =D The perks of staying in the DCU Bang as a Solo Author are your story is posted in the DCU Bang LJ/DW communities, shared in the DCU Bang Ao3 Collection, and you can have your Tumblr post reblogged by the DCU Bang account! Solo authors still need to have their fic meet to the 5k/10k minimum requirement, and have their story beta-read.

A note on beta-reading: You can choose the level of beta-reading you want, from hardcore story critiquing, to just a second pair of eyes for catching spelling and grammar errors. If you do not want to have your story heavily beta-read, this is fine! But please do get a second person to read through and help catch the spelling and grammar errors.

How to Submit Your Rough Draft:

  • Email your fic to dcubang@gmail.com
  • The subject line should say: Username ROUGH DRAFT - and include the username you used to sign up!
  • I can accept the following file types: .doc, .docx, .rtf, and Google Docs. If submitting a Google Doc, share with dcubang@gmail.com with editing capabilities, otherwise I cannot verify the word count. If none of these file types work for you, contact me ASAP at Page-A-Mod, or send me an email at dcubang@gmail.com! Do not send a different file type without first contacting me!
  • In the body of the email, copy and paste the information below and fill it out, keeping the html tags. This is so I can quickly post summaries without having to format everyone's submission! Also, if submitting via Google Docs, you still have to email me with the following information filled out.

  • Take your time with your summary! This is what artists are going to use to make a determination in their claims. Make sure to give enough information for potential artists to make decisions, but don't write so much that it is overwhelming. Here's a helpful post for writing artist summaries! Also keep in mind that this is a summary for attracting an artist, so the information you give might be very different from what you would want to give to a potential reader. The artist summary does not need to be the same one you use for your story later on!
  • Make sure to be clear and thorough about trigger warnings so that artists will know what they are signing up for! You must put any and all warnings in this version of your summary, even if you decide to use an "author chooses not to warn" label later. Artists need to know what they are signing up for, after all, and we don't want artists, nor authors, unhappy with the match. Please warn for: noncon, dubcon, excessive or graphic violence, underage sex, incest, character death, and anything else that might be potentially problematic for a reader! Do not warn for slash, femslash, or het.

Once I receive your submission, I will be sending a confirmation email in return. If you do not get a confirmation email within 24 hours, please get in contact with me at either the DCU Discord server, emailing me at dcubang@gmail.com, or using the Page-A-Mod post! If you have any other concerns or questions, please be sure to get in contact with me through any of those means as well!

The deadline to submit a rough draft is 23:59 MDT, August 21st!

These summaries are what will help an artist determine if they want to work with your story! Please read through these do's and don'ts, to help sell your fic! It’s important to know that this is a summary written for an artist, not for a reader. You’ll want to include more visual information that will attract an artist, versus what you would write to attract a reader. Some of these “don’ts” are fine for attracting a reader, but aren’t as helpful for an artist!

Please take your time when writing your summary and ask for help if you need it!

    Things not to do:
Don't just give a quote from the story! A quote probably won't tell the artist enough about your story as a whole, just one specific point. It doesn't give the artist a clear picture about what they are claiming, so they may pass your story for another one that has more information.

“Clark was starting to feel he was choking on the air, but he pushed away such thoughts. It’s not like some incense smoke could hardly suffocate him, after all.”

    Or:

“Sigyn… The woman Loki could have loved for an eternity, were it not for Thor…”

While a quote such as these might draw in a potential reader, it doesn’t give enough information to an artist for them to make a decision and know what they are working with.

Don't turn in a wall of text! It's good to give potential artists plenty of information, but a full, lengthy story summary is more likely to cause people to tune out. Strike a balance between giving enough information, but also keep it focused. I recommend no more than 3 reasonably sized paragraphs.

Don't list every character that appears in your fic. You want to keep the focus on your main characters and/or pairings, and including all your background or minor characters/pairings could get an artist's hope up for that character/pairing being more prominent than they are.

    Things to do:
Do make sure that your summary is edited! A summary that has typos and bad grammar is less likely to inspire an artists in your writing abilities. This goes back to taking your time with your summary and asking for help, if you need it!

Do give a well-thought out summary. If you put time into your summary, it's more likely to show. Ask for help if you need to! A good summary gives a clear idea of what your story is about. If you have an outline for your story, consider working from it to develop your summary.

While in search of a missing Batman, Clark lets his closeness and feelings for Bruce get himself caught. Now both Superman and Batman are in the clutches of Hell Mistress Tala, and she's intent on causing as much chaos as she possibly can, and what better way than invading the minds of the two most powerful members of the Justice League? She is well on her way to chaos, but no plan can ever go smoothly; Batman has lost his memories due to her efforts, and invading Superman's mind is not as easy as she had thought. But, how long can Superman hold out before she fully invades his mind, and just what sort of information and truths will she uncover while in there?

    Or:

The bitterness inside of Loki has been bubbling and growing for millennia. A prophecy is on the verge of being fulfilled and Loki must tread lightly, or all the centuries of careful planning will be undone, but if he can keep his tongue silver and lie well, he will come out of this conflict with the final pieces required to move his plans for revenge forward.

Do give some visual information of places or time periods, if appropriate or applicable to your story! For instance, if your story involves taking a trip to Rome, an artist who loves the idea of drawing Roman architecture, may want to pick your story! A good way to do this is to include a second paragraph, with a few artist notes.

The story is set in multiple different locations, definite locations include Metropolis and Gotham, as well as Wayne Manor or the Batcave. Primarily it is set in an alternate dimension/cave-like setting or in the mind.

    Or:

This story takes place partly in Ásgarðr, and partly in Avengers Tower and New York, where a large battle with Fenrir and Jörmungandr will take place.

Do be clear about warnings! If your story contains things that need warnings, you can choose to take a little extra space by explaining what your artist might encounter. For example, if your story has dubcon in the final version, an explanation in your summary can help artists decide whether or not they will be comfortable working with your story.

The noncon parts are frequent throughout, with Tala nonconning Superman and mind raping him. Graphic violence occurs, but in less detail than the noncon.

    Or:

Pseudo-sibling incest between Thor and Loki. Graphic violence in the form of battle and torment happen, Loki’s children are murdered in some detail, as are torture methods. Mpreg mentioned, but no graphic details.

Put it all together and this is what your summary form should look like:

    Username: LuciferxDamien
Word Count: Around 30k total, 28k written
    Completed Percentage: 93%
Title: The Smoke in Your Eyes
    Genre: Drama, Action, Romance
Fandom/Universe: Superman and Batman, no particular canon, but I am more partial to the Animated Series
    Characters/Pairings: Clark/Bruce; Tala
Warnings: Noncon, graphic violence, mind rape
    Rating: NC-17
Summary: While in search of a missing Batman, Clark lets his closeness and feelings for Bruce get himself caught. Or:

    Username: LuciferxDamien
    Word Count: 30k-ish
Completed Percentage: 80% (25k written, a few scenes to finish)
    Title: To Lie and Wait
    Genre: Drama, Action, Romance
Fandom/Universe: MCU with a heavy Norse Myth twist
Characters/Pairings: Thor/Loki; Doctor Doom, Heimdallr, Óðinn, the Avengers
Warnings: Incest, mpreg, graphic violence, torture, death
    Rating: NC-17
Summary: The bitterness inside of Loki has been bubbling and growing for millennia. Remember! This summary does not have to be the summary you use when posting your story. This summary should be designed to catch an artist's eye! You are more than welcome to change and/or tweak things to catch a reader's eye. For example, you can remove visual information about time periods and locations, and more the detailed information on warnings/triggers, if you so choose when writing your summary for a reader!

    What is this community for?

A Big Bang/Mini-Bang is a writing challenge that prompts authors and artists to work together to create a story and work of art that go together. In this case, our fandom is the DC Universe, and our goal is 10,000/5,000 words

10k/5k is a lot. How long do I have to come up with that?

Don't worry - you've got plenty of time! Sign-ups will open up in May, and rough drafts won't be due until the end of August, with a complete beta-read version due in mid-October to the end of November. Your story must be finished and posted in its complete form on your posting date, regardless of length or how many chapters it is. (Minor editing after it has been posted is okay, of course!)

What about artists? How much time will we have?

More than a month. You'll pick a story after rough drafts are submitted at the end of August, and your final product will be due when the completed story is due in mid-October.

If you are an artist that would like more than a month to work on your art pieces, consider getting partnered up with an author early on! This is known as a tandem sign-up and artists and authors will be able to find partners on the Discord server, if this is the path you would like to go! This allows artists as much time as the author’s have to work on their pieces!

    So, what's allowed here?

The easy answer to that is: pretty much anything! We're open to slash, het, and gen, no matter your pairing preference. If you want to write Clark/Lex or Jason/Tim, that's awesome, and if you've got a great idea for an epic Batman/Catwoman or M'gann/Conner, that's perfectly acceptable as well. You can base your story off of any medium - so whether you’re a diehard Young Justice cartoon fan, into Smallville, or someone who loves the comics, you can participate! The only thing explicitly not allowed is pedophilia for the sake of pedophilia - if it's a plot point, it's okay, but we're not going to post stories that have sexual situations involving children (for our purposes, anyone under the age of 15). If you have a question about your pairing or specific idea, leave a note in the Page-A-Mod post, send an email to dcubang@gmail.com, or send [personal profile] luciferxdamien a PM, and I'll discuss it with you on a case-by-case basis.

Stories and art have to be new. If you've written something that's 10k already and posted it, awesome! However, this is a chance to create something new, so if your story has been posted elsewhere, it doesn't qualify for this challenge.

Sequels to stories you've written are acceptable! If you write a sequel, be sure to link back to the original story, so people can read that as well. =D

What about crossovers, fusions, and AUs?

The only requirement for this Bang is that the primary focus of your story be on at least one character from the DC Universe. If you want to write Batman in Ancient Rome or Superman as a new member of the Hawaii Five-0 task force, you are more than welcome to. However, if you want to write a crossover that focuses on Harry Potter being a new member of the Justice League, this is not the place for it. The focus must be on a DC character. Crossovers with other comics fandoms are allowed, but the focus has to be on the DC character.

What are the requirements for fic?

Traditional Big Bang 10k: Your story has to be at least 10,000 words, and there's no maximum limit. You can work with a co-author or a group, if you're more comfortable; the minimum word count will be 10k no matter how many authors work on it.

New Mini-Bang 5k: Your story has to be at least 5,000 words and there’s no maximum limit! You can still work with a co-author or a group, if that is something you are more comfortable doing, and the word count must be at least 5k, no matter how many author’s work on it.

You'll also need a beta reader for your story. If you have your own, that's awesome! If not, there will be a Discord channel for finding partners, so you'll be able to find someone there to work with. This is non-negotiable. You have to have a beta reader. If you want to have more than one person beta read your story, that's fine, too. One is a minimum, not a maximum. =D

Can I sign up to write more than one story?

Sure! You can sign-up to write to two different stories for this challenge. If you do want to write two stories make sure to sign-up separately for both. If you have to drop one or both make sure to contact [personal profile] luciferxdamien before rough drafts are due so that you don't leave an artist hanging!!! If you have to drop either story after you have turned in the rough draft you will be banned from next year's challenge.

    Can I sign up with a co-author?

You can work with a co-author or a group, if you're more comfortable. But remember, the word count will still be 10k no matter how many authors work on it. Just make sure to sign-up all authors on the sign-up sheet and have everyone join the comm. The limit of two stories per author still stands even if all the stories are co-written.

What if I've already posted part of a fic? Can I finish it for this challenge?

The purpose of this bang is to unveil a brand-new, completed piece on your posting date, however we are okay with you finishing your piece as long as you have not posted more than 2,000 words for the 10k Traditional Big Bang or 1,000 words for the 5k Mini-Bang and do not post any more until your posting date. Since this Bang has a minimum word count of 10,000/5,000 words we are asking that no more than 2,000/1,000 words be posted prior to signing up, so that at least 80% of the fic is new.

Please note that the 2,000/1,000 word limit still holds no matter how long your fic is - even if you complete a 100k epic, you can only submit it for this fest if you've published less than 2,000/1,000 words of it before signing up for this challenge!

    What counts as art?

Lots of things! Traditional art, digital art, manips, and fanmixes (with cover art) are all fine. Vids are also an acceptable form of art. If you want to check that what you have in mind is appropriate, leave a note in the Page-A-Mod post. We'll discuss it on a case-by-case basis.

I'm interested, but I'm not sure what to write.

There will be a channel in the Discord server, just for prompts! Anyone can leave a prompt, and anyone can take a prompt. If six authors choose to write from the same prompt, that's totally fine. If someone wants to mash three prompts together, that's also fine. If someone wants to use half of a prompt, that's fine. Sensing a trend yet? =D

This also means, should you choose to leave a prompt, it is for anyone to use, in whichever way they want. If there is an idea that you want done in a very specific manner, it may not be the best for you to leave it for this Bang, as all authors are free to use prompts however they see fit.

Where can I post my story?

The simple answer to this is: wherever you feel comfortable. If you want to post in your own journal, that's great; if you want it up on AO3, that's fine too. You can put it at Dreamwidth/LiveJournal or your personal website or anywhere you feel comfortable hosting it, so long as it can be publicly viewed. We don't care about where, but we do care about when: don't post your story - or even parts of it - before the date you will select in October.

How many pieces of art can I create for one story?

The minimum is one piece of art and there is no maximum! Please do not take on more than you can complete!!! However, if you would like to create multiple pieces of art, consider claiming more than one story, in the event we have more stories that need claiming than there are artists signed up!

Will every story have art?/What if too many artists sign up for the amount of stories written?/What if I want to create for more than one story?

As it stands, we're aiming for every story to have art with it. If we have five authors sign up with ten artists, well, stories will be double-claimed. Some people will want to sign up as a solo participant and don't want to work with an author/artist and other people will want to work with a specific author/artist, which is a tandem sign-up.

During the first round of claims, each artist can only claim one story. However, after the first round of claims is complete, if there are still stories in need of an artist, a second round of claims will go up, and all artists will be able to claim a second story, if they wish to do so. If, after the second round of claims, there are still stories in need of an artist, artists will be able to claim additional stories until they are all claimed. As an artist, please do not claim more than you can finish!

Can I sign up as an author and an artist?

If you want to, more power to you! That's awesome! If you wish to create art for your story only, you can sign up as a solo-author, and it will be entirely up to you to create art for your story! By signing up as an artist, you are offering to create art for someone else’s story during the claiming period, so if your intent is to create for your own story only, sign up as a solo-author!

And again! Please do not take on more than you can handle!!! If, for at any reason, you do not believe you can continue, as an artist or an author, contact me ASAP!

    What is a solo author/artist?

A solo author/artist is someone who wants the structure of a fanwork challenge without having to work with someone else to create an accompanying fanwork. By working alone, you don't have to worry about whether you complete your project or not because you won't have a partner depending on you. You can also decide to do your own art or find your own partner to work with. Basically, I won't be matching you with an artist or an author, but you can still have a fic with art if you arrange it yourself. You can also work on other kinds of projects like podfic if you desire.

It will also be possible for solo-author/solo-artists to change their mind, should they feel capable of completing their works in time for posting! Please do not choose to switch from solo if you are not confident you can complete your story/art. If, after switching from solo and you are not able to complete your story/art and you have been paired with an artist/author, you will be banned from participating next year. We don’t want to leave anyone hanging!

    What is a tandem sign-up?

A tandem sign-up is when an author and artist choose to sign-up together. This way, the artist will be able to work with the author throughout the entire process and have more time to complete their art. If an author or artist want to work with each other, after one or both have already signed up, no problem! Just send me a message and I will get that updated!

This is a great option for artists, and authors that want to have more time working together. The Discord server will have channels set up so that artists and authors wanting to work longer together can find a partner!

What if I can't finish my story in time?

That's fine! I understand that sometimes the muses won't cooperate or life gets too hectic. You are free to drop out of the challenge with no penalty any time before you turn in your rough draft, just let me know. You are also welcome to participate as a solo author and not submit your stories for an artist claim. That way if you finish it, you can post, and if not, there will be no penalty! However, if you have to drop out after an artist has claimed your story, you will be banned from participating in next year's bang. We don't want to leave any artists hanging if we can help it.

If the artist and author agree to drop out together, there is no penalty!

Do I have to join LJ/DW/Discord/AO3/Tumblr to participate?

The short answer is no. You don't have to join any particular platform in order to participate. However, if you want to keep up with Bang updates and take part in the more social aspect of this challenge you will want to follow us on the platform of your choice. Discord in particular is where the prompt post, beta finding help, writing support, word sprints, and more are going to be, so you may want to at least join up there!

Can I have some more specific dates, please?

Of course! There will be a timetable going up in May.

2018 DCU Big Bang Schedule can be found right here!

I still have questions! Where can I ask them?

There's the Page-A-Mod post right here. Just leave a comment there and I will get back to you as soon as possible! Or, if you would prefer to email me at dcubang@gmail.com, that is totally fine too!
